Actually Exploreworthy: Invictus

Its been a while since I posted something here. Partly due to RL reasons (good RL reasons!), partly because there haven't been so many interesting sims I have seen lately and none really which was worth to take some photos and blog about them.

Invictus though is different. Unlike most LEA installations it is more than just a plain surface, dotted with some more or less random abstract humanoid sculptures: It is beautiful, dense, gloomy and in its composition and emotional impact simply stunning!

Sure, the visual standard today has become pretty high in SL. Complex, mesh structures with baked textures and material effects are a commonplace, but aesthetically many creators are walking on a well beaten path. This sim though makes things a bit differently; has some edge and a certain vibe... and it did instantly captivate me.

Before I forget: the theme of the installation is a poem Invictus by William Ernest Henley:

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

So yeah, check it out. Its not shit!

Sunstone

Here's now something less-Second Life related (yet somehow it is, but more of that later), but with a quite high BDSM content. I guess long-term readers of my blog don't object that ;-)
You may have seen the drawings of Shiniez (or Stjepan Sejic, how he is known in the rl-world) hanging on some walls in Second Life (for example at Dark Wishes) or on his DeviantArt page.
For those who are not familiar with him: His fetish-comic/graphic-novel series Sunstone is about the Domme Ally and her Sub Lisa and their adventures together. Yes, in- and outside of their bed :p

Ally and Lisa. I don't think I have to tell you who is the Domme and who the Sub!

Sunstone is quite something special: Besides the outstanding quality of the artwork, it also show BDSM as a fun activity between two quite believable persons, not just exchangeable one-dimensional fetish-figures with exaggerated anatomy, as it is the case in a lot of fetish art.
You get to see them silly and playful, slouching around home in all-day clothes, bound and full of excitement, but also struggling with their self-doubts or with life's numerous ways to make things more complicated.
His characters have exactly what the name says: character.

There is also an  aspect in Sunstone which makes me wonder if the author has any experience with Second Life (hence the hint at the beginning of my post): He describes Ally as a (at times) hardcore MMO-player, so it seems rather likely that he is at least aware of it (and hence likely of its BDSM-scene too). Anyway, in Volume 1 he shows a bit of the backstory of his main characters and how they found each other and eventually came together. From BDSM sessions inChat to exchanging more and more personal details and sending each other pictures till finally meeting up in real-life for the first time...
This is another aspect of the story which rings a bell for me, because that is exactly the way how Emma and I came together. Ok, we are less comical (hopefully!) but the pattern is the same and a lot of the feelings and thoughts which went through their minds could just as well been ours.

Sunstone also isn't shy of addressing the more serious aspects of BDSM like trust, health and safety (Safeword, SSC*), but usually not in a preaching way and very well woven into the story.

The only issue I really have is the visual uniformity of the characters. The girls all have more or less ideal body-shapes and all characters have quite similar faces and hairstyles (and not only that: tons of redheads, tons!)- and so far they are all white (I'm not waiting for Drows to appear though!).
So that's a bit of a flaw, but not a big one really as it doesn't affects the quality of the story or the visuals. (Edit: I was - at least partially - wrong: Harper, the owner of the BDSM club in Sunstone is actually black).

All in all Sunstone is a light-hearted and very well written (and drawn) series I am glad to recommend to everybody. Newbies to BDSM, who don't quite know where to start will likely find it just as entertaining and insightful as more experienced people who may find a bit of themselves in the characters.

Volume 4 of Sunstone was released recently and whilst you can get the series as digital copy or even as part of a humble bundle, I recommend the real deal and getting a printed copy. It is with $15.99 only insignificantly more expensive than the digital one ($11.99) and you can "forget" it innocently on your coffee table and see how your friends react to it ;-)

Vol. 4, not the Black Sabbath one. That's here.

In A Pub in Tether's End...

Strolling through SL often leads to meeting talented and interesting people - thats one of the things I really like it for. Like today at Tether's End, when I met Mellow - a bloody good photographer. It's definitely worth to check out her flickr page!

Last Day of SL12B Tomorrow!

Tomorrow is the last day of SL12B! If you haven’t visited it yet: hurry! ;-)

The Dream Generator. Not a world-domination machine - really!

It's starting up...

This little picture gallery shows my Dream Generator in action.

New Steampunk Vehicle and More of SL12B!

As I hinted one or two posts ago, I was in the middle of working on a new creation when SLB came in between. Well sort of. The design was basically finished in my head, I just had to get it out (which is sometimes actually the harder part). So the change to building The Dream of Steampunk was a pretty welcome one. After that was finished, I had a fresh approach for:

Tada! My new Steampunk Gyrocogster!

I dare to say this cute little thing is one of my finest builds yet. It is quintessential steampunk with its da-vinci-style wings, the steam-engine and its irresistable cute look.

2nd Week Of The SL12B - Part 2

As promised yesterday, here is the continuation of my SL12B gallery. Some of the buildings you can find there belong to the finest you can find in SL - and outside of it.
Of course building quality isn't everything. Some exhibits impress with clever ideas, making extensive use of the possibilities virtual worlds do offer - others look just damn cool!

Not a borg-anthill: Astonish DJ Stage

2nd Week Of The SL12B

After the busybusy preparations for SLB, I spent most of the last week strolling around there (which is quite a task for itself - it is 15 Sims!). Well ok, I also finished building a new vehicle, which I will present soon. But for now, lets have a look at SL12B and some cool exhibits!

Getting Ready For SL12B!

Yes, it is that time of the year again, when the grid celebrates the birthday of Second Life. Its the 12th already - time flies! 12 years are quite a steep age for the internet. When SL started, there was no Facebook, Amazon mostly sold books and even Google was still rather a novelty.
I personally didn't experience SL until 2007, which also is an appalling while ago already! So I got spared from all that mayhem of the grid's early days - and experienced instead the regular mayhem we more or less still have today!

Over the years I learned a lot here. About people, myself and last but not least building. When I started with SL I had absolutely no idea about building or even meshes, textures or scripts. I actually didn't dare to touch the build window until being 2 years on the grid - and promptly messed a nice set of wings up!

Well, things have changed. I can mess up the things I have built by myself now! Yay - achievement! But seriously: I am very happy for what I have learned and for the creativity inside me I could unleash via this lovely and messy and laggy digital world called Second Life.

In the recent years I also went more and more into attending events. First as visitor and blogger, but more and more also as exhibitor and this year's SLB will be very special for me in this regard: I will have my own exhibit on SLB!

I was busy building my exhibit most part of last week, taking my inspiration from various directions, added with a good amount of madness and megalomania. May I introduce: The Dream Of Steam!

I bet you don't guess where I got the idea for the building from.

The exhibit features the most sophisticated steam- and tesla-technology. With lots of rotating gears (ask Emma, she had to script them all!), discs, glowing tubes and tanks and lightning and whatnot, to spread funny and crazy steampunk dreams into the world. Likely without causing permanent physical or psychological harm - yay!

No, it's not a doomsday-machine. Well, at least not quite.

The 16 SL12B sims will be opened on Sunday, June 21 at 12 PM SLT. The first week will see plenty of events. More info about this on the official SLB blog.

And here is a direct-link to my exhibit. The best way to start exploring SLB anyway, if you ask me!

Have a wonderful time!

Never Drift - First Pictures!

My good (and pretty crazy) friend, Professor Wickentower seems to finally has put down roots - air roots of course! He is now the happy owner of his own homestead region - Never Drift.

Here some first impressions. Needless to mention that its a lovely scenic and steampunky floating village with fort, airship dock, lighthouse, pub - and a lot else to discover!

Currently Never Drift isn’t open for public, but once the building is finished, access will be granted - stay tuned!

On A Cup Of Cappuchino In Venice

Having a lazy afternoon in SL I went to the digital recreation of Venice. It is a lovely whimsical place and really caught the spirit of its real-world counterpart. I just had to show it to Veronica too :-)

We both are admirers of this city - she however knows much more about it than I do. So we had a nice cup of cappuchino at the Rialto Bridge and I had the opportunity to hear some more gritty stories about the historical Venice - far away from the mental tracks the usual tourist wanders on.

No, I won't call this picture "having some cappuchino" ;-)

The Rialto Bridge overlooked by the St. Mark's Campanile.

A friendly Gondoliere took this photo for us!

Every picture gets nicer with fairys on it.

If - after these pictures - you don't feel like going there and exploring the place by yourself, there is definitely something wrong with you ;-) Here is your gondola.

Veronica Vinyl - Art of The Extreme - Available Now!

You might remember my preview a few weeks ago about the cool pieces of fetish art my friend Veronica is releasing. The first two pieces are now available on the Marketplace - more will be released in the coming days :-)

"Mistress Alexia"

Glamour meets pain – that's the world of award-winning, internationally renowned fetish artist Veronica Vinyl.
Her art features both real-life Mistresses in all their iconic brilliance as well as pieces of weird fetish imagination.

"I catch fetishes like other people catch colds. A churning maelstrom of emotions and opinions and ideas that war constantly for my attention.
I am wracked with desires, evil and forbidden, depraved and debauched. All seeking expression.
Yes, I plunge headfirst into the reality of private dungeons and fetish clubs. Yes, I partake of forbidden fruit, and let the whip fall where it may.
I feel the ropes, taste the gag, lick the sweat, and moan in pain and delight, lost in the matte blackness of the blindfold.
Yes, I revel in my humiliation. I wallow in my narcissistic pleasure and swim in my agony.
I am corrupt, decadent, and depraved... but I think a quick gander at my work will tell you all that."

"Dark Masque"

Yes - I'd say she is right.

The Art of Veronica Vinyl is exclusively available at her SL Marketplace store!

Holy Pixel!

There are just a few days left till the 6th Machinima-Expo starts - November 17, to be precise - and I am happy to inform you that Veronica Vinyl is taking part there with her short film "The Nail"!

Title picture The Nail

The Expo - in its former incarnations located in SL - will be held from 10 am to 4 PM pacific time (handy to know that this is the SL-time too) live on stream. For a schedule, follow this link.

Veronica's film - completely shot in SL of course (with notable addition of some cool-drawn artwork) - features an old legend where a Gypsy steals one of the nails made to crucify Jesus Christ from the Romans and gains eternal (first-) life. Being a short film its just a glance on an epic story spanning over 2000 years from its beginnings in ancient Jerusalem to the horrors of nazi concentration camps.
You can watch the film as part of the Screening Reel 7 (2nd film!).

Fetish Art, Product Updates And A Short Resumé On The Femdom Hunt

Longer phases of blogging inactivity usually mean: your favorite Drow designer was busy again! And thats again quite true.

I'm currently working on releasing the artwork of my friend and RL fetish artist Veronica Vinyl in SL:

Dark Masque by Veronica Vinyl in my living room.

Her paintings can be found in the best professional BDSM dungeons in the world. Now you can have a piece of the glamour (and pain ;-)) for yourself! To emphasise her strong and vivid yet classy visual style her artwork will be featured in custom-made high quality mesh frames exclusively.

Also my first mesh biplane, the Kestrel (see here and here) is in its final stage of preparations and will be availalbe till the end of the week :-)

And because it looks so good, here some more preview pics!

Last but not least, the Femdom Hunt organized by Z&A turned out to be a bigger success than ever before. The response was enormorous and everything went very, very smooth. I'm not good in searching, so Emma and Taffy (after some "motivation") had the honour to be my bloodhounds ;-) Thanks you two!

For every time the hunt item was further away then 30 meters of the TP point, Z&A provided the "lying Antony" for the hunt path - best look for yourself how this turned out ;-)

Oh and the Sunshine Technology hunt-gift we made seems quite popular. A deluxe version is in the making. If you wonder what it is, take a look at the pictures of the femdom hunt opening dance or at Antony's blog. The yoke's on you :p

Jordan Reyne Live @Cyhtleen's Bookstore!

Before the big opening of the Kreativdorf (creative village) and Cyhtleen's bookstore at Kueperpunk's sim Ataria on coming Saturday 29th, Jordan gave a concert there tonight.
Its always a touching experience to listen to her. She is really one of the most gifted and charismatic performers in SL - no she doesn't pays me to say this! Its simply the truth :-)

Here a few impressions of the concert. I hope to see you there on Saturday too when she is reading her new horror story "Remembering the Dead".

Here the virtual time-space coordinates in short:

Jordan Reyne readying "Remembering the Dead" Saturday 29th, 1 PM SLT @Der Buchladen an der Ecke. No worries, the story is in English ;-)
