An Undead... Sim?

Shoregate, today afternoon: still kinda there.

It seems not only the zombies of New Shoregate, but the whole sim itself has become undead! Exactly one week after the last payment happened the place is still intact! Well – mostly.
I don't expect this state to last for much longer though. I guess the rental company just wants to show what beautiful landscaping and builds are possible on a homestead sim. There is at least a clear sign that the land managers did indeed visit and like the place. They put up their land sale booth right in front of the tower, instead of clearing up the sim and rezzing it then.

This is quite ironic, but shows how much the place was and still is appreciated and loved. That's at least how I interpret it ;-)

So if you want to pay the Sim that was New Shoregate a last visit – better hurry. It is still here. But who knows for how long.

This way, please.

P.S.
Due to changing the land-group by the rental company zombies, kraken or the plane rezzer don't work anymore. but the tram is still there!

Byebye for Now, Dear New Shoregate

Actually I wanted to surprise you with great news about New Shoregate moving to a shared full sim (which would mean more prims, more traffic, more Avatars allowed at the same time) but as things sometimes go in SL, this seems rather unlikely now, due to reasons beyond my control.
I also have to announce that we are forced to close the Sim down today - hopefully just temporarily.

Land pricing in SL is just ridiculous for what you get and one of the reasons it never reached the mainstream, if you ask me. Sims come and go, often before their could reach their full potential due to too high rent costs - like New Shoregate and its predecessor.

This is pretty saddening, taking into account how much time and passion my friends Cyhtleen, the Prof and I put into the Sim to make it the beautiful place it was.

I hope this isn't the last thing you will hear about New Shoregate. I'd be certainly more than happy to recreate it in the (hopefully near) future. Actually Emma and I were busy to make a backup of the buildings I made for the Sim with the Scene-Rezzer-System she did develope. (Interesting fact: The bridges, houses and roads I made were less than 800 prims in total - now is that efficient or not?^^)

So New Shoregate isn't lost. Its essential parts are sleeping in my inventory, ready for their return. And when it comes back it will be better than ever before!

Lets celebrate New Shoregate's glory with this little gallery - I hope you enjoy it!

P.S.
Apart from these rather unpleasant news, things are going great for me. Especially in RL. I was pretty busy in the recent weeks and didn't had much time to be active in SL or write in the Drow Diary. But it's the good busy!

Balloon Battle Part 3 - Results

Too bad I missed the battle this time. Instead I was battling a RL cold. Seems I have won at least there!

Nevertheless the third part of our tournament was another great success, so I've been told. So was the after-battle-party!

This time the tournament saw also a little modification: We introduced an altitude-limiter. I know, sounds complicated, but its basically just a invisible megaprim-platform to prevent balloons from rising too high.
The aim was more intense fights and preventing balloons to escape the battle by climbing out of sight. Both seemed to have worked very well.

The Winners of both round 1 and 2 were: Baroness DeSade and Ala - congratulations!

I hope to be back in the battle next Thursday though! Hope to see you all there!

Come and hunt it down at the Drow Science Mainstore!

The Steam X Hunt goes from today, March 1 till March 31, for more info tickle the official Blog: Steam X Blog

New Shoregate Battle Balloon Tournament - Round 2 Results!

Was the first battle already a success, this time has been really a blast (no pun intended)! I didn't expect that we would actually hit the 20 Avatar-limit of the sim (hard to believe, but New Shoregate is a homestead after all!) - but we did!

So we had no less than ten (10!) battle balloons circling and firing at each other! How great is that? The amount of lag was surprisingly low. At least on my end: I barely noticed the notorious rubber-band effect or delays when steering. Not bad at all for a sim both at its prim- and avatar-limit!

Also a big thank you to Randy Quander again for the spectacular photos!

Ok, enough rambling, here the results:

Winner of the 1st Round: Some (thats me, if you haven't guessed already) and Emma.

Winner of the 2nd Round (and 1500 L prizemoney) : Silly and Lynnbexter.

Our (in more than one way^^) daring  photographer!

The winners landing after a hard battle!

After the fighting was over, it was time to celebrate in the nearby Morlock's Revenge Pub!

Congratulations! Both rounds were damn tough fights - but very enjoyable nevertheless! See you all next Thursday for part three of the tournament!

Name The Street!

As you might have noticed, New Shoregate has quite everything a decent, zombie-infested steampunk city needs: zombies, a tram, airships, stores, a workshop... you get the idea.

But what New Shoregate is still missing is: Street names! This has to change, don't you think?

For this reason, we are asking YOU to send us your ideas how to name the streets - and you can win cool prizes!

Every idea, which makes it into a official name, will be rewarded with a gift! Either from Drow Science or Prof. Wickentower's Airship Workshop - yay! As rule of thumb: the more important the place, the bigger the prize!

How does it work? Very simple: The map below features numbers from 1 to 9. The first seven are streets which want to be named, number 8 and 9 are the cemetery, respectively the swamp with the sunken fair grounds.

All you have to do is send a notecard with your name and your ideas to Somehow Peccable before March 12. The filename should be something like this:

((Insert your name here)) New Shoregate Name Contest

With its content in this way:

1. Somehowroad
2. Somehowstreet
3. Somehowalley
4 ...

The winners will be announced soon after March 12.
You don't have a name for all numbers? No problem - the list doesn't has to be complete, you can win regardless how many name proposals you send.

We are looking forward your ideas!

P.S. The street signs are donated by the lovely Misty Payne from the sim Tempelhof. Definitely a place  worth to explore (hint, hint!)

Professor Wickentower's Airship Workshop

The name tells it already: beautiful and sunny New Shoregate got a new addition! The Professor has set up his Workshop at the North-Eastern corner of the city - just where the factory was (we might have been forced to blow it up to clear the space!).

This is where the Professor feels really at home: blueprints, tools and the grime of years of airship-building.

Did someone say mad scientist?

Hardbottle, the erhmm... charming Watchman.

Robots working, human watching!

Spare-parts waiting for their use

The Professor musing in his office after a long and hard day.

The charme of bricks - the Airship Workshop seen from outside.

Feel for exploring the place? Here is your ticket, just don't wake up the Professor, if you see him!

New Shoregate just became a tad more - unsafe

As if zombies aren't enough, now the notorious air kraken have chosen New Shoregate as their residence too!

Of course I started my faithful Steampunk Monoplane at once to fight the threat:

Aaargh! Air-kraken at my six!

After intense fighting I was able to defeat these critters though - the sky over New Shoregate were safe again. Well, temporary at least - they have a terribly high reproduction rate!

A successful air-kraken hunter returns.

According to my experience, air kraken are extremely dangerous opponents. They are fast and quite persistant. They more than once tried to drag my aeroplane to the ground, so beware and watch the sky! Luckily they are vulnerable to physical bullets. If you can kill a zombie with your gun, then you have a chance against an air kraken too.

Happy hunting!

Here is your ticket to New Shoregate. Expect zombies, air-kraken and crazy flying drows.

Madness, Mystery and Decay - New Shoregate's Backstory

Early on when developing New Shoregate, we agreed on certain core-aspects the new sim should represent. There wasn't actually much time we spent on debating these points, they just fit together simply. One thing was that we wanted a Steampunk sim, then it was supposed to become more dark and "gothic" than its predecessor, of course we wanted zombies too, and a certain amount of weirdness. Well, I think we got that pretty fine!

The backstory did also happen like by itself. There had to be a cause for the zombie invasion after all, and what fits better to Steampunk than good ol' H.P. Lovecraft? To write a first version down wasn't much a stretch then. Like the city itself the story was already there - it just needed to be put on "paper". It is quite possible that the Backstory gets extended or - in details - changed in future, where necessary - you can see this as the first version of the story of New Shoregate:

"New Shoregate was once a prospering seaport at England's coast, until that stormy and unholy night of the 17th November 1898. It was the night when the Airship HMS Arkham crash-landed near the lighthouse when returning from its expedition to the South-Pole.

The citizens of New Shoregate were curiously awaiting the return of the ship: Before departing to New Shoregate, the leader of the expedition telegraphed to have uncovered mysterious artifacts from an ancient civilization, which „represent a revolution in archeology and paleontology and will put the evolution of man in a completely new context“.
But neither the crew of the Arkham, nor the citizens of New Shoregate ever got the chance to celebrate the return of the expedition. Witnesses later reported the wind that night howled like a furious beast and dragged the vessel to the ground like by a giant invisible claw.
No-one of the locals, who hurried to the wreck to rescue the crew, ever in their lives talked about the things they found and what exactly happened there, but soon the flames of a large fire at the site of the crash-landing were visible from everywhere in the city. The reasons for this fire could never been found out and many of the rescuer died in the months after that cursed night.
People soon began to speculate that the fire was perhaps laid by the rescuer themselves to destroy what they found at the crash-site.

Since then things were never the same again in New Shoregate. Soon strangers came to the city and showed a peculiar interest into the HMS Arkham's mission and the events leading to her wreckage. There were rumors of unholy rituals near the crash site and at the local cemetery. Some kind of disease, so the locals said, started to spread, slowly corrupting everything getting contact with it. People started to suffer from mysterious symptoms and were haunted by unspeakable nightmares. Sometimes so horrifying that, upon waking up, they were so desperate that they committed suicide.

The following year became known as the 'Black Year' in the city's history. After the darkness of the winter-months, spring didn't bring light nor relief: The sun stayed a weak and pale under thick clouds, covering the city in a strange, alien twilight. Even the stars seemed to have come under some corrupting influence, as if they started shifting their positions, forming new unknown constellations
More and more people died from the disease. Soon the cemetery became too small for all the dead and the city council ordered that a mass grave should be dug instead. But the nearby swamp began to grow unnaturally fast, devouring the fair grounds and flooding the fresh burial site, bringing the dead back to the surface.

An exodus began: Many citizens left the city with the freight-ships which visited regularly and New Shoregate became more and more a ghost-town. The people who stayed barely dared to leave their houses anymore, because of the weird, unnatural noises from the swamp which could be heard all night long.
The city council sent out an expedition there to investigate the source of these noises, which returned with appalling stories of the things they have seen – or believed to have seen: corpses floating in the swamp, somehow still moving their decayed limbs and trying to free themselves from the mud. Some even said that the dead crouched towards them.

Last reports of survivors date from summer 1899. Since then, contact to New Shoregate has completely ceased. The Miskatonic University – while highly interested in the whereabouts of any survivors and of course the HMS Arkham and its cargo – strongly warns everyone visiting New Shoregate to expect the unexpected."

I think you should take this warning seriously - but visit the New Shoregate anyway!
